Decorating the Coffee House Way - an occasional series

If you're ever painting a room - say, for the sake of example, the kitchen - and you think it would be a good idea to use masking tape to run round the edges of the kitchen cupboards and worksurfaces to protect them from the paint, here's a tip - DON'T.

And if your husband ever suggests that this might be an idea, and even goes so far as to be found with the roll of masking tape in his hand, the best thing to do is just sit him down and use the roll to tape him to the chair until his impulse passes.

In fact, why not go downstairs into the cellar right now, and if you find any masking tape you can just throw it away, just in case.

You'll feel better. I promise.

Yours, swearing the morning away with white spirit and a hot cloth,

The Coffee Lady

  1. Hmm, I'm guessing it didn't go too well then?

  2. I only recently discovered that there are different sorts of masking tape - 24 hour, 2 day, 3 day. You obviously have the ten second type.

Funny how the one with the bright ideas is seldom the one to be found sorting out the aftermath...

  3. Uh-oh. In a situation such as this one, java might not be your best beverage. Got a whisky bottle that's not empty and serving as a rolling pin??

  4. Even the tape cleverly sold to us as ideal for masking during painting was rubbish. Though it was a fetching shade of blue.

Decorating the DC way involves leaving it until it is so shameful you can't have anyone in and then turning it into a drawn out performance of surface preparation and endless colour selection that reminds me why we left it so long in the first place ...

  7. hmm... I know what you mean but I saw a tip on one of those programmes a few years ago with Linda Barker. I 'de-tack' the masking tape a few times on my jeans before putting on the thing i'm trying to protect. That way, it's covered with fluff and only just sticky enough to stick to the item concerned. x
