Saturday

An amazing new Saturday morning routine has been established. Mr Coffee and I are not allowed out of bed. Indeed, if we do dare to venture downstairs - to make a cup of tea, perhaps - we are greeted with horror. "What are you DOING, Mummy? Don't come DOWN here!" We are forced to go back to bed; to read books, to drift off to sleep once more.

It is an important time for the Lattes. Eldest must watch back-to-back episodes of Wolfblood. Littlest needs to allocate time to YouTube videos of Littlest Pet Shop toys. You might think this an innocent, sweet activity. Take a moment. Watch this. At least watch the credits.

This Saturday (when we were finally allowed to rise), we were permitted to go into the town centre to spend Eldest's birthday New Look voucher. And to browse the charity shops; buy veg from the market; shout hysterically at each other in WHSmith; and go for a coffee.

This picture, of me reading a book about over-eating whilst eating a chocolate brownie, was taken by Mr Coffee. It's a companion image to one from 16 years ago that he holds only in his mind (camera phones weren't so ubiquitous back then), of me reading a book about stopping smoking whilst smoking a cigarette. (The book, How To Stop Smoking and Stay Stopped for Good, by the same author, is one I'd highly recommend to anyone trying to quit - I haven't smoked since. I'm hoping my latest charity shop find will relieve me of the need to buy two Milka chocolate bars every time I pass a Spar shop.)

Later, we ate spaghetti bolognese by candle-light, watching Junior Bake-Off projected onto the kitchen wall using a home-made projector which Mr Coffee created out of an empty cardboard box, a magnifying glass, and an upside down iPhone.

It was a a bit blurry, admittedly - we could just about make out by the shapes that they were making biscuits - but it was lots of fun, and we got to draw edifying diagrams like this, which were studiously ignored.

And with Strictly Come Dancing, watched under a quilt, and a good book read in a hot bath, it turned out to be more or less a perfect day.

  3. A blissful day indeed. I love reading books about healthy eating while eating cake. If it's done without cake I tend to start feeling panicky.

  6. I just read a book called Slim for Life, about the food industry and addiction. A friend told me it would change my life. I spent the entire time reading it getting hugely frustrated by the prose and the patronising style. I felt obliged to eat chocolate after I finished it to display my cynicism for it.......
